Dr. Hlas is the author of Practical creativity: Language activities and ideas for your language classroom (2019) from Cognella Academic Publishing. In addition, she received the 2005 Emma Marie Birkmaier award for outstanding dissertation work from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and more recently received an ACTFL Research Priority Grant to explore high-leverage teaching practices. In 2014 she was honored to receive the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Excellence in Research Award. Her research interests include second language teacher knowledge, teacher use of technology, and teacher target language use. She regularly publishes work in Foreign Language Annals, the Language Educator, and Hispania.

Teaching Interests

She regularly teaches the world language methods courses, second language acquisition, and beginning to advanced level Spanish courses. In addition, she loves learning new technologies, traveling, conferencing and spending time with her family and friends.

Education

She is a native of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and received her bachelor's degree and master's degree in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her doctoral degree in Foreign Language Education with a specialization in technology from the University of Iowa.
