Are you or anyone you know struggling with some kind of substance addiction? If so, where should you turn for help?
Christina Garcia and Breanna Showkeir will describe the peer recovery-coaching services available in northwest Wisconsin March 28 during Thursdays at the U at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire – Barron County.
The presentation will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall and will be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.
Christina Garcia
Garcia has worked in behavioral health services, Indian child welfare and other social services for more than 15 years. She currently is a program coordinator for the Marshfield Clinic Health System AmeriCorps Recovery Corps, supporting members at various community organizations by providing technical assistance, recovery-based knowledge and advocating for those in recovery or seeking recovery.
Garcia also is a trainer at the Recovery Coach Academy of the Connecticut Community of Addiction Recovery and has obtained her recovery coach professional certificate. She holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Viterbo University in La Crosse.
Breanna Showkeir
Showkeir serves as a recovery coach with the Marshfield Clinic Health System AmeriCorps Recovery Corps, with the Barron County Department of Health & Human Services as her host site. She is continuing her education at Northwood Technical College with an education award from AmeriCorps and has achieved honors from the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
Showkeir has been clean and sober from all mind-altering substances for the past three years and her greatest joy is giving others hope that a better life is possible.
The Thursdays at the U weekly series is free and open to the public thanks to support from the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Neither seating reservations nor parking permits are needed for in-person attendees. There also is a livestream option and recordings are archived on the Thursdays at the U webpage.
The next lecture in the series will be April 4, with Dr. Rick St. Germaine, professor emeritus of history at UW-Eau Claire, presenting “Iijidiwashikwe: Heroine of the Northwoods,1840s.”
