Discovering Community Through Service
Discovering Community and Commonality through Service in Puerto Rico is an opportunity for students to explore cultural, political, environmental, and societal differences and similarities through volunteerism. Students will be able to connect with community members of this US territory through hands‐on work, intentional conversations, and educational opportunities. Exposure to these components will allow students to critically think about their individual identities and privilege.

Puerto Rico
UW-Eau Claire is partnering with Community Collaborations International to create a unique experience in Puerto Rico for our participating students. The immersion program is ten (10) days in length with all transportation, lodging, food, and organization fees included. Students will be exposed to the local culture through everything from food to our service locations and will have the opportunity to reflect on their role in the global community. The entire immersion program is able to be customized but previous volunteer groups have worked to help families rebuild their homes, support Boy’s and Girl’s clubs and HeadStart Programs, and help restore the devastated environment.
The immersion program costs $350 which covers all meals, travel, lodging, and all materials required. This program selects it's 10 student participants based on the application below. Applying does not guarantee participation. Additionally, it is worth all 30 hours of service-learning.
This program will be accepting applications for 2025 starting February 1st and will close on April 1st.
Our partner organization has a leader guide that shares more information about the basics associated with this trip including information around lodging, meals, the projects we might be working with, and more. Interested students can access it below.

Connecting on ‘ever-deeper’ level
Leyirabari Gininwa has had many amazing experiences on and around the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s campus during his years as a Blugold, but a service-focused immersion on a Caribbean island might top them all.

Building connections, understanding
Growing up, Andrés Mallea was aware of his Latinx/Latine identity, but he didn’t know much about his community’s history. That’s changing thanks to the people, classes and real-world opportunities he’s found at UW-Eau Claire.
