The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering is a new major at UW Eau Claire that has launched in Fall 2021. The process for accrediting this new major through the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET is in progress.

Program educational objectives

Within a few years of receiving their undergraduate degree, graduates from UW-Eau Claire’s Biomedical Engineering program are expected to be able to: 

1. Combine emerging engineering technologies and life sciences to create new ideas and novel solutions for modern healthcare problems. 
2. Demonstrate leadership, problem-solving proficiency, critical-thinking, and creativity in managing human health challenges and obstacles. 
3. Develop designs driven by clinical and regulatory requirements, innovate novel bio-instrumentation and biocompatible systems, and develop diagnostic and therapeutic devices. 
4. Contribute to the research objectives of academic and industrial projects, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. 
5. Embrace the learning process as a life-long endeavor.

Student outcomes

The BME Student Learning Outcomes are the same outcomes (1) through (7) described by ABET that are in effect as of the 2020-2021 review year:

Outcome 1 -- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics                                                                                            

Outcome 2 -- an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors                                                                                                       

Outcome 3 -- an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences                       

Outcome 4 -- an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts

 Outcome 5 -- an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives                            

Outcome 6 -- an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions

Outcome 7 -- an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
